Antique Coquille Basin – Jacob Delafon Style, Early 20th Century
Elegant antique corner basin in the shape of a coquille (shell), dating from the early 20th century. Likely manufactured by Jacob Delafon, a distinguished French sanitaryware maker known for his refined and enduring designs that were widely used in upscale European interiors of the era.
Crafted in antique white glazed ceramic, this basin displays crisp, well-defined lines – a testament to the quality of early moldwork, which has rarely been matched since due to the gradual loss of detail in later reproductions. On either side of the bowl are two integrated soap trays, delicately formed in matching shell patterns. These are fully intact, a rare detail as they are often damaged or missing in similar pieces.
Designed for wall mounting with a wall faucet installed above. Such compact basins were traditionally used in water closets, guest rooms, or servant quarters. The shell shape reflects the naturalistic and ornamental aesthetic of the Belle Époque period.
